Barr Mansion Chapel

Barr Mansion Chapel, oil on panel, 9 x 12

The Plein Air Austin group met at Barr Mansion on Saturday, August 7th, and I opted to paint this little wedding chapel.  The mansion itself is a beautiful Victorian-style structure and I took several photos of that and would like to go back and paint it when it’s a little cooler.

Grant and Katie

Grant and Katie, oil on panel, 9 x 12

This was a photo my son Brian took of his son Grant and Grant’s cousin Katie while they were in Cancun.  I loved it and wanted to paint it for Brian’s birthday to give him along with the painting I did of Grant’s brother, Brady.

Scottish Fishing Boat

Scottish Fishing Boat, oil on panel, 8 x 10

This was from a photo I took two years ago on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.  I’m hoping to take more photos this year and to get some rather colorful photos of all the boats on the island.  It’s a glorious place and we can’t wait to go back!

Brady #2

Brady with soccer ball, oil on panel, 9 x 12

This was the second painting I did of my grandson Brady as he was demonstrating how to play soccer to his younger brother and cousin.  It was such a sweet photo and I couldn’t resist painting it for his dad’s birthday.

Serengeti Elephant

Serengeti Elephant, oil on panel, 6 x 8

I painted this from a photo we took in the Seregenti – he was our first elephant and we were entranced.  He stood at a little pool for the longest time and drank from it while we took a lot of photos.  We loved the Serengeti!

El Primo

El Primo, 8 x 10 oil on panel, NFS

El Primo is my son Scott’s favorite taco stand in Austin, and he used to go there just about every day when he lived here.  I painted this for him as a going-away present right before he left for France, where he will be studying for an MBA in Nice for the next year.  I really miss him and I think I’ll have to start going to El Primo so I can get all nostalgic.

Brady the Coach, 6 x 8 oil on panel, NFS

I painted this from a photo I took the night we had Scott’s going-away party at my daughter Anne’s house.  The whole family was there, all five kids and four grandkids.  This is my oldest grandson Brady giving a soccer demonstration to his cousin Madeline and brother Grant.  Grandkids are so much fun!

Kelly Lane Barn II

Pflugerville Barn @ Kelly Lane and Highway 130, oil on panel, 9 x 12

This is the painting I plan to donate to The Arc of the Capital Area for their annual fundraiser and auction.  It’s one of my favorites and I hope it does well in the auction.  Barns continue to be fascinating subjects for me to paint – so many different colors and such great shadows and angles!

San Marcos Paintout

Posted on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 in Austin area, Landscapes, Plein Air

River Pub & Grill, San Marcos, 8 x 10 oil on panel

I painted this on a paintout last Saturday with Plein Air Austin.  It was organized by Robert McArthur and we met at Rio Vista Park, a very popular place on the river with lots of rapids, a playground, hiking trails and a gazebo.  Afterward, I drove to Luling to take photos of the Zedler Mill, the site of a future paintout organized by Robert, but one that I will have to miss due to vacation plans.

Tim and Friend

Tim Horn and Friend, 6 x 8 oil on panel

This was done from a photo taken by Kate Merriman while we were at the workshop given by Tim Horn in Marin County.  Tim was doing a demo and several horses decided to wander over and see what was going on.  Tim didn’t lose a beat, though and kept right on painting!
